we're staying. for... a while. why? because when we came home from church two weeks ago, our host family's yard looked like this:
they'd hacked down 3 large trees and host mother meh had a steely glint in her eye as she went gallivanting around the plot with a machete. i had to physically restrain her from murdering all of her plants, but she got a fair few when my back was turned.
that's right, folks. we're building a house. i won't say we didn't consent to it, but the torn-up yard surprised us ; ) it turned out that buddhist lent started the next day, and for the next three months, starting a project is forbidden. so we had to have, before midnight, at least one foundation hole dug, offerings to the local spirits offered, and holy water sprinkled and incense burned while the temple man chanted over our soon-to-be new home. so we did.
yes, we have lost our minds.
but now we'll have a legit place to house visitors. so please do visit! just wait three months so you won't have to sleep on one of these:
how cool is paw? so cool. 52 years old yesterday. suk san wan gxt!
and yes, WE are building the house, with generous help and direction from paw, obviously, as we actually have no idea how one builds a house. i say WE because i did dig one stinking foundation hole, and it took me 5 hours. such a wuss. nick did 5, and three lovely burmese men did the other 6 for three times their usual daily pay, which was still a pittance. but that injustice is a wholenother post in itself. and he's actually doing them all 12 again at the moment, because we had 4 monsoons since the original digging, and they all filled up halfway with the sticky dark clay that's nearly impossible to remove. whoops. sorry, love. thanks for letting me be the water girl instead!
hopefully you won't accidentally disinter another family pet this time around.
the white dog at right is still alive, ps. the other one was definitely less plump. good thing everyone was so entertained, rather than scarred for life. hoorah and huzzah for thailand!
