turns out chiangmai's version of the ic isn't quite the same; the room seats only 30ish people, as it's a classroom, and the movies aren't edited. heavens! we had no idea what would be playing, and we were accidentally 5 minutes late, cuz nick got LOST. and because i had to visit the powder room beforehand. shocker. and in those 5 minutes, they actually started the movie! so we had to scamper across the screen to the desks on the far side, and i was muito shamefaced. no guessing who the neophytes are tonight...
the movie was DREAM, a film by ki-duk kim (apparently it's korean, but they definitely speak japanese, at least sometimes, so i'm confused). let's talk about creepy. actually, let's not. nick walked out of it asking who on earth enjoys movies like that, in easy earshot of all the white-haired professors and vegan-tinted women who were raving about the poetry of the ending. and that's why i love that boy.
but the point of this all is that butterflies are a very central motif throughout, and when we got home, there was a butterfly in our room that was more or less identical to that in the movie. and it wouldn't go away. it was a lovely little yellow thing, and when i woke up in the morning, i was greeted by its delicate frame resting directly above my head on the mosquito net, dead.
how's that for poetry?
ps, if you're into character dramas and venturing into the abstract, and you don't mind some very unapproved-by-byu sexy business--which you SHOULD, of course; i'm just sayin'--i wouldn't say you shouldn't see the movie, even tho nick would. it was very asian and melancholy and sometimes just odd, but if you're looking for an experience, go for it.
i will promise you there are no alien babies that come bursting forth from pregnant women's wombs, and that's a promise i cannot make concerning any thai movie. these guys have sheer horror pretty much mastered. says the girl who watched the mothman prophecies through a blanket. but still.

Pretty much, I love you guys.
unapproved-by-byu-sexy business eh. tut tut.
the dead butterfly was a little dramatic, maybe it was in the middle of filming a music video about how it used to be in love with another butterfly until she broke his heart and then her new boyfriend ran him over with his car? (we saw many a music video with said story line in Thailand- well, yah, with humans instead of butterflies though)
We recently saw a brazilian film at ANU, also unapproved-by-byu. Wish i could remember the name of it.
love you!
