angkor wat

welcome to the most insane set of ruins in the world (according to us)!!! angkor was the royal compound of kampuchea starting from the 10th century AD. cambodia was the kingdom in charge at the time, controlling a ton of modern burma, thailand, laos, and vietnam, and they definitely flaunted their stuff with angkor. apparently everything was painted red back in the day, and i can't even imagine the terror x 1000 prisoners of war would feel marching up to this:

as we were not prisoners of war, the experience was merely exhilarating. you could easily spend a week there and not see half of the complex. the whole thing was actually lost for centuries until the french rediscovered it in the 1500s. imagine stumbling upon this crazy guy in the middle of the woods!

my personal favorite temple was the one lovingly referred to as the "angelina jolie temple," which is where tomb raider was filmed. they decided to leave all the strangler fig trees in place, and the effect is sooooo cool, even though it leaves the ruins a bit more, well, ruined. quite the surreal place. and that's enough talk. bring on the photos!

intricate reliefs covering just about every square inch (or square centimet) in Ankor

ginormous stairs leading to a raised section of the temple. we didn't get a chance to bribe any security guys into taking us up there... sad day. I guess we'll have to do it when you come to visit us!

miraculous sunset over Ankor, with a hot babe guarding the front. the place makes you feel like you are in the jungle book, its incredible!
